Status of German and Austrian Road Tax
German MAUT
It is now certain that the German MAUT will be raised as of September 1, 2007.
The average increase is 1,1 eurocent, and for a typical truck/trailer (4 axles or more as well as euronorm III-IV), the increase is from 12 to 13 eurocent, which is equivalent to 8,33%.
For groupage goods, that must be collected/distributed in Germany, the costs will also be affected by the fact that since the start of the MAUT, more main roads have been closed off to trucks. These closures mean that much of the distribution traffic is forced onto roads where there is MAUT payment. This has affected the total costs.
Austrian Road Tax
Its also certain now that the Austrian Road tax will also be raised, as of July 1, 2007. For a typical truck/trailer (4 axles or more), the road tax as of July 1, 2007 is 0,3255 euro, equivalent to a rate of 7,44.
The road tax is subject to 20% austrian tax, as it was before as well.
The road tax is in effect for the whole road tax affected roads in Austria, with the exception of those roads with an extra high road tax. These roads have basically not been affected by the raise on July 1, 2007. One exception is however the road on the A9 between Spital/Pyhn to Arding/Admont and the S16 from St. Anton/Arlberg to Langen/Arlberg, here the road tax will actually be lower.
The extra costs pr. kilometer are 0,39 kr. in direct tax raise, and approx. 0,02 kr. in indirect extra costs tied to loss of liquidity, tax refunds, and more.
For transit routes such as Kiefersfelden - Brenner, the total extra costs is 31 kr. or approx. 17 øre pr. 100 kgs assuming a 18 ton load on the truck. For the transit route Passau - Nickelsdorf the corresponding costs are 87 kr. and 0,48 kr.pr. 100 kgs.
Brochures and Documentation
There is currently being worked on publication of new information brochures on both the German and Austrian road tax. At the same time, the documentation material is being updated. We hope that the brochures will be available in the beginning of August, but it depends on the holiday situation with the publishers.
